It is the responsibility of all primary schools to teach swimming in either Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2. Here at Seaview, we are fortunate enough to offer this in both Key Stages. The swimming attainment targets state that all pupils should swim confidently, competently, and proficiently over 25 metres.
National Curriculum Requirements for swimming:
The guidance in the National Curriculum, regarding what pupils should be taught in swimming, can be seen below. These attainment targets are measured and recorded by the time pupils leave in year 6.
Pupils should be taught to:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
- use a range of strokes effectively (for example: front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke).
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations.
